Essential foodbank collections to restart in St Peter's in April

Collections of items for Worcester Foodbank are set to resume in St Peter’s at the beginning of April.

They will continue every month until October.

Organiser John Renshaw said: “In the year December, 2019 to December, 2020 the number of unemployed people in Worcester doubled to 3,655 as a result of the pandemic and unfortunately this figure is expected to go even higher this year.

“Consequently I’ve been looking into organising more collections to support the Worcester Foodbank.

“Everyone who helped with last year’s collections has been contacted and virtually all the volunteers want to help again.

“In addition some new volunteers have contacted me wanting to become involved, which is fantastic.

There will be a new venue for co-ordinating donated items.

During last year’s collections St Peter’s Baptist Church hosted sorting of items but it will be unavailable during coming months as it is being used as a Covid vaccinations hub.

St Mark’s Church in Cherry Orchard will be the new co-ordination point.

The collections in St Peter’s grew throughout last year from covering just a few streets in May to the whole of the ward by the time of the Christmas foodbank collection in November.

Collection dates this year are:

  • Thursday, April 1, 7pm;
  • Thursday, May 13, 8pm;
  • Thursday, June 3, 8pm;
  • Thursday, July 1, 8pm;
  • Thursday, August 5, 8pm;
  • Thursday, September 2, 8pm;
  • Thursday, October 7, 7pm.

The May collection is on the second Thursday of that month as the church is being used as a polling station for the local elections on Thursday, May 6.

The April and October collections will be at 7pm rather than 8pm so they can be completed in daylight.

The collections will be organised the same way as last year, with supporting flyers.

The group welcomes new volunteers.
