Golfer Maisie crowned under-14s champion

A Year 8 student of Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College has shown she is up to par in a series of successes in golf.

Maisie Whittall has been crowned England under-14 girls champion as well as Worcestershire and Herefordshire county girls champion.

That followed on from her victory in the girls junior club championship at her club, Gaudet Luce in Droitwich.

Maisie played in the 18-hole competition at Moseley Golf Club in the Girls County Championships, entering the silver salver.

She scored 41 Stableford points playing off 8.3 (nine shots). Her round included four birdies and an eagle.

Maisie then entered the English Girls under-14 Open Amateur Stroke Play championship at Par 73 Morecambe Golf club.

Her opening two rounds included birdies and bogies and she narrowly made the cut by one shot to enable her to take part in the final round.

During the final round the young players had to contend with 30 to 40mph winds and driving rain.

Maisie made one birdie but made a triple bogey on her way to a score of 83 gross (+one).

She waited tensely in the clubhouse, watching her score of 220 (+ one over par net after three rounds) take her steadily to the top of the leader board as other players dropped shots.

Three players finished on (+ one net) but with Maisie’s final round being the lowest of the final day, she took first place on countback to take the title.

She has also received a handicap cut down to 6.8.

Maisie then took part in the Champion of Champions tournament in Wicklow in Ireland.
