Retired men's club aims to attract new members

A social organisation for retired men which meets in Battenhall wants to recruit new members.

Worcester South Probus Club meets every alternate Monday at St Dunstan’s Bowling Club in Greenhill, off London Road.

The club’s treasurer, Geoff Winkworth, has been a member for six years.

He said: “I have to say that of all the organisations I have been associated with, Probus has been the most rewarding as far as enjoying the company of new friends as well as being informative and thoroughly enjoyable.”

He added: “We are an entirely social and recreational club. We do not fund raise and the only cost to members is the cost of running the club and engaging speakers.”

He went on: “Although Probus members maintain a little tradition by wearing a jacket when weather permits and optionally a club tie to meetings, we enjoy a very relaxed atmosphere and great comradeship.

“We begin with a chat and then sit down to enjoy a talk or presentation on a variety of subjects, very often including slides or video.

“This is followed by more chat, coffee and biscuits and a very short business meeting.

“We also enjoy periodic outings with wives and partners, which usually include a visit to a pub for a meal.”

Mr Winkworth explained: “Probus clubs are a fantastic antidote to loneliness and a point of focus for retired members, providing companionship and recreation – so important in maintaining mental health.”

He invited prospective new members to attend a meeting if they were considering joining.

South Worcester Probus Club’s meetings run from 10am until noon. Parking is free.
