Worcestershire County Council and agencies aiming to help 16 to 24-year-olds into work

Worcestershire County Council is working with partners to help support 16 to 24-year-olds following disruption to their training and pathways into work.

Worcestershire LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) and the county council are working in partnership with the Careers and Enterprise Company to ensure that the county’s future workforce has the information needed to make an informed decision about their next steps in September.

Conservative councillor Marcus Hart, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Education and Skills at Worcestershire County Council, said: “It is very important that we support young people that will have had their next steps into employment or training affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m pleased that we are working alongside the Worcestershire LEP and the Careers and Enterprise Company to ensure Worcestershire’s future workforce is provided with vital information to 16 to 24-year-olds that will support their journey to work.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced a temporary jobs scheme that will offer work placements for an estimated 350,000 young people.

Cllr Hart said: “We welcome the news of the kickstart scheme that will offer six-month work placements for 16 to 24-year-olds.

“We recognise the young people in this age bracket are likely to be some of the hardest hit following the nationwide lockdown period and that this scheme will provide opportunities to those people.

“We look forward to seeing this in action for young people in Worcestershire.”

The Careers Worcs Information Advice and Guidance service offers support for 16 to 24-year-olds looking for education or training choices to understand their next steps in light of the coronavirus.

The service will help young people to make informed careers decisions about education next steps for September, including current year 11 and year 13 students.

As part of the Inspiring Worcestershire initiative, Careers Worcs will be delivering two-hour long webinars following GCSE and A Level exam results days in August.

The webinars will explain to young people how to apply for apprenticeships, traineeships, college courses and university during the Covid-19 outbreak.
